Can nature and technology — long viewed as opposing forces — work together to create liveable cities and improve public health? The Internet of Nature Podcast is on a mission to find out.
PlanIt Geo is proud to partner with Dr. Nadina Galle for the Internet of Nature podcast's fifth season exploring the future of urban forestry. The first episode will be released on April 5th. There are four seasons of episodes available now, featuring interviews with top thought-leaders & entrepreneurs on their technologies for building greener, healthier, and smarter communities. Each episode contains powerful stories behind the innovator, delves into questions usually shied away from, and explores where the internet and nature converge.
Canopy Preservation in the Hands of Tree Care Companies
Do private tree care companies have a role to play in canopy preservation? We think so. By making canopy preservation a factor in their work, companies have the opportunity to benefit the overall landscape of their area AND gain a competitive advantage.
For our California compatriots: the CalFire Green Schoolyards grant is open, with up to $117 million available this year for planning and/or implementing greening projects around public schools and childcare facilities. Cities, counties, school districts, or nonprofit organizations may apply. The application deadline is April 28th.
Urban Trees at the End of Life Are Turned into Valuable Products, Rather Than Chipped for Landfill
There is a range of creative (and potentially lucrative) reuse opportunities out there for urban wood waste for communities that can develop a local market and build a network of partners. Get a rundown on some of the ways urban wood waste is aiming for higher-end uses in this article from the Good News Network.
Tree canopy data leapt in to a new frontier in 2021. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) helped tree canopy data reach new heights of accessibility, expediency, and accuracy. This presentation will showcase the methods behind AI and ML tree canopy data and how it integrates with TreePlotter CANOPY to support community’s urban greening goals.
The next generation of tree canopy data is here, come learn what it can do for your urban forest!
This webinar brings together two distinct perspectives on urban tree canopy assessments, one from the United States and one from the United Kingdom, to find unique approaches and common ground. Presenters Ian Hanou, PlanIT Geo Founder & CEO, and Russell Horsey MICFor, UK TreePlotter Partner, will compare examples of urban tree canopy data in action and discuss how canopy data is helping communities around the world reach their greening goals.
With unprecedented federal investment on the way, there is a lot of work to do. PlanIT Geo is growing to match the momentum of this movement. We know YOU know some of the best talent in our industry. Please share these opportunities with anyone who might be interested.
For our Nonprofit Friends, We’ve Got a Funding Idea for You
Giving circles are groups of individuals who pool their money on a periodic basis and then vote on different causes to support. There is a platform called Grapevine that helps these circles get organized and helps connect them with nonprofits. You can use this link to explore giving circles in your area to see if there are giving circles that may be a good fit to support the hard work you do.
Climate Change Threatens up to 100% of Trees in Australian Cities
Last year researchers evaluated urban forests in 78 countries for susceptibility to climate change. Cities in Australia were found to be at an especially high risk of urban trees experiencing stressful climatic conditions, such as the City of Darwin, where a full 100% of tree species were found to be at risk. Learn more about the study below.
A study of 100,000 Australian adults found nearby green space reduces risk of cardiovascular disease. Larger amounts of tree canopy, but not open grass, were associated with these positive health effects for house residents. Interestingly, those living in apartments did not show the same cardiovascular benefits.
Our subscription-based tree canopy data is disrupting the traditional tree canopy mapping and assessment process that has been the status quo for over a decade. Naturally, that has generated discussion around methods, accuracy, human intervention, and data ownership. Check out our blog for answers to all these topics and more.

A tree inventory is a powerful tool, but getting a sudden trove of tree data, where there used to be zilch, presents a challenge: how can you put all of that information to BEST USE. This is where an urban forest management plan comes in handy. To see it in practice, check out the Community Forest Management Plan for Schenectady, New York
