There is a lot that goes into running an effective urban forestry program. As a hub for urban forestry innovation, PlanIT Geo is able to provide support and guidance at any step in a program’s evolution. That also means we do a LOT of different things.
We built this one-page guide to map out all of the solutions we offer to help public urban forestry programs grow, improve, and adapt, organized by key program areas, including funding, planning, monitoring, and more.
Advancing from Reactive to Proactive Tree Management
Fewer tree failures. Efficient work scheduling. Healthier tree populations. Justifiable budgets. There are abundant upsides to proactive tree management. This free guide, codeveloped with PlanIT Geo’s Australia software partner, makes the case for why proactive tree management is worth pursuing and lays out a framework for how to get there.
Five Ways Rewilding Can Help Address Climate Breakdown
Mitigating the causes and unavoidable impacts of climate change will require audacious human ingenuity and technological adaptations, but we also need to build space for our greatest ally to contribute. PlanIT Geo has partnered with Cobra Groeninzicht (translates to green insights), a unique Dutch consulting firm specializing in big green data, remote sensing, tree monitoring, analysis and tree risk assessment.
“We are thrilled to expand our global partner network into western Europe with Cobra. We are similar companies: innovative and passionate about technology and urban trees for greener cities. They are a frontrunner in the Benelux region. It was a perfect match!” said Ian Hanou, PlanIT Geo’s Founder & CEO.
We’ve upgraded TreePlotter’s Community Engagement Map (CEM). Our newest edition to the CEM allows you to display multiple layers of points and polygons within a single, interactive page. For example, users can toggle between a layer of tree points, to a layer of park locations, to a layer of playground equipment. If desired, work records and photos can be shown for each asset as well, so residents can see the work that goes into maintaining their community spaces.
There is significant and growing attention being given to tree inequity and patterns and processes that drive those inequities. Improvement will require urban greening, but frontline communities and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) scholars and activists have long understood from their lived experiences the benefits and burdens of greening are not equally shared.
It’s no small feat to develop an urban forest plan. It takes a committed core of leaders, plenty of community partners, and significant financial and political momentum. However, the upside of a quality plan is tremendous. Having a plan for your trees helps ensures your management decisions today lead to sustainable, maximally beneficial outcomes in the decades to come. So where does a community begin?
As the consultants for dozens of plans for cities, counties, and nonprofits, we’ve assembled a guide of best practices and considerations for getting an urban forest plan off the ground. We also hosted a webinar on the topic, available below. Whether you’re in a small town looking to develop a plan to support a new program or you’re part of a robust urban forestry program in a large city, we’ve got tips to jump-start your planning process.
In Canada, as well as in the U.S., urban parks and forests are missing in racialized and marginalized neighborhoods. Nature is for everyone, but not everyone is able to enjoy its benefits to the same degree. Learn more in the story from Nature Canada.
