The general fund has long been the core of urban forestry funding but is stretched thin to meet the vast range of municipal demands. Urban forest programs often build out additional funding streams and grants are an effective way to fund singular projects, such as public tree inventories and strategic plan development.
Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act federal urban forestry funding is about to get a major boost, which will be echoed at the state and local levels. A Massachusetts street tree study found their lives to be fast and dangerous. Researchers observed the trees had an almost 4X faster mean diameter growth rate and 2X greater mortality when compared with local rural forest stands.
