The Biggest Tree Care Day of Service Is Almost Here
On Wednesday, September 28th tree care and landscape professionals will gather at national cemeteries across the country to donate their time, equipment, and expertise for the Saluting Branches annual day of service. Last year 2,572 volunteers worked 77 locations and donated services worth $2.6 million!
As Saluting Branches continues to grow and expand their reach, we have set up a TreePlotter INVENTORY application for all volunteer sites for the second year in a row. The app enables volunteers to collect or update tree inventories on site, such as tracking services, treatments, removals, crown raise, and more. PlanIT Geo is proud to be able to participate again this year, and several of our employees will be working at sites in Colorado, Iowa, North Carolina, Washington, and California. It’s not too late to sign up! Use the links below to learn more and find a location near you.
On a Warming Planet, Urban Trees Become Critical Infrastructure
It all starts with a great plan. See how Yale completed its first Tree Management Plan in 2020, and what they learned about the essential services their trees provide every year, including 1.3 tons of pollution removed, 57 tons of carbon sequestered, and 71,000 cubic feet of runoff averted. Plant For the Future With A Sister Climate City Analysis
How do you plant trees today that will thrive in the expected climate conditions 20, 30, and 60 years in the future? A formidable, but key question for any urban forestry program. In this blog, we break down one of our methods for identifying trees with climatic staying power, the Sister Climate City Analysis, in a project with Fremont, CA.
TreeRadar: Non-Invasive Tree Risk Assessment Technology
TreeRadar is a non-invasive radar scanner that maps, visualizes, and quantifies the root systems of trees and trunk decay. This technology, pioneered by ProArbol, is harmless to the tree, allowing for a high volume of evaluations without any disturbance to the sites or trees.
Have a thousand park trees in high-traffic areas that need to be evaluated? With TreeRadar you can map the volume and distribution of all thousand root systems and identify those with high failure potential without any soil excavation. We have partnered with ProArbol to offer this advanced method of high-accuracy risk assessments to our clients.

i-Tree's New Ecosystem Benefits API
As THE FIRST COMPANY to implement i-Tree's new ecosystem benefits API we are still hard at work refining and improving the feature. We have been releasing new functionalities to make data cleanup easier, allow for international use, and keep data updates efficient.

Trees Are the Secret Weapon of America's Historic Climate Bill
Another great read on the tremendous opportunities ahead thanks to billions in forestry funding from the Inflation Reduction Act. “These carbon benefits alone would justify investment in nature-based climate solutions, but fighting climate change with nature is also valued for a second reason—investing in nature can solve many problems at once.” Check out the full TIME article below.
There are challenges to managing a healthy urban forest that are shared around the world, including pests, storm damage, and development. This webinar will bring together different perspectives to compare how unique objectives, methods, and technology are employed around the world to tackle urban forestry’s biggest challenges.
In this webinar Ian Hanou and Russell Horsey MICFor will host two highly respected urban forestry professionals, David Sivyer, Program Manager at the US Forest Service, and Cecil Konijnendijk, co-founder of Nature Based Solutions Institute and Global Urban Forester, to discuss urban forest management in their regions and compare with others around the world.
New Rules Put Puget Sound's Urban Trees in Private Hands
See how cities around Puget Sound are trying to strike a balance between retaining existing trees without hindering development. It's a tough task to tackle an extreme housing shortage without major tree canopy loss. "With a majority of trees living in residential neighborhoods, cities are trying to shift more of the responsibility for maintaining the canopy to homeowners, with both rules and incentives."
A few weeks ago, we had our PlanIT Geo camping trip, full of hiking, kayaking, rounds of STUMP, fox, moose, and mushroom sightings, and a thankfully small amount of rain (after the first night at least). It was great to bond outside of the office and supercharge our NatureDose on the shores of Lake Granby, Colorado.
We share lots of tree stories from the field and company adventures on social, follow along below.
Three cheers for open access to high-quality tree writing! The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and the Society of Municipal Arborists (SMA) have BOTH opened up access to their respective journals to non-members. Here are a few of our favorite recent reads.
